UN Special Rapporteur Critisises Situation in Georgia

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor, heavily criticised the situation of human rights defenders in Georgia since the implementation of the Foreign Agent Law (see our May newsletter). Despite widespread popular protests, the law was enacted on 28 May 2024, placing Georgia in violation of its human rights obligations regarding freedom of association and expression. The law officially came into effect on 1 August 2024. Since then, human rights defenders and civil society actors have been subject to physical attacks, and threatening phone calls, and have received threats in their homes and offices. The Special Rapporteur urges the Georgian government to reconsider its approach and calls on authorities to implement her recommendations in her latest report to the Human Rights Council earlier this year, aimed at addressing and improving the conditions for human rights defenders in the country.
