A new report by the Dutch research institute SOMO shows multinational companies have long relied on Chinese workers’ cheap labour to produced goods such as phones, laptops or shoes. However, recent geopolitical and economic tensions as well as the aftermath of the pandemic leads to more and more big companies retreating from China as place of production to mitigate financial risks in their supply chains.
Even though assessing the clear impact of these developments is hard due to China’s closed political context, SOMOs investigation shows that the effects of the recent developments are hard for many Chinese workers, with many losing their jobs or struggling to get paid.
