HRC adopts resolution on monitoring human rights in Belarus

Human Rights Council (HRC) voted in favor for a resolution

Today the Human Rights Council (HRC) voted in favor for a resolution, mandating the High Commissioner to create a new robust monitoring and reporting mandate focused on accountability for human rights violations in Belarus that have taken place since 1 May 2020. In so doing, the Council demonstrated its determination to hold Belarusian authorities to account.

65 Belarusian and international human rights organisations, including La Strada International, launched a statement today, to welcome the resolution passed by the UN Human Rights Council. For this new accountability mandate to meaningfully and substantively address the human rights crisis in Belarus, the organisations launched 6 recommendations to ensure that the mandate will have sufficient funding and expertise to take up its important investigative task and to ensure transparency, information provision to and involvement of Belarusian civil society.
