Immediate accommodation is being provided by the authorities or by charities. The Temporary Protection Directive offers the right to suitable accommodation and housing and sustainable solutions therefore need to be found in the medium term combining the public reception system with private accommodation offers.
When you are offered housing, it is important that you are well aware of your rights and be careful that you are not exploited. Ask in advance, if anything is expected of you staying at a certain place. Do not accept support from someone who expects something in return. If you get to a place to stay and you do not feel safe, leave it. There are various initiatives set up for safe housing for displaced people.

Our member KOK published guidelines for private accommodation for refugees that you can check. It is important that rents are fair and that you sign a contract with the owner of the accommodation. In case you are asked to take up household tasks please note that for domestic wage you should be paid a fair wage, ‘donations in kind’ such as free meals or accommodation are not considered a wage. A written contract will ensure a transparent and safe relationship for both sides. Further note that you should not work more than 8 hours, be provided with minimum a minimum wage; sick pay and maternity leave and that the person who offers you work should also comply with occupational health and safety rules.
