LSI granted Consultive status   (Common latest news)
The United Nations’ Economic and Social council (ECOSOC) has granted La Strada International (LSI) consultative status at its substantive session in July 2010.

The consultative status gives LSI the ability to actively participate in the work of ECOSOC, as well as other bodies within the UN, such as the UN Secretariat. LSI will be allowed to consult with UN member states and discuss concerns and ideas within the field of human trafficking.

Furthermore LSI will now be able to designate official representatives to the UN, as well as participate in events and activities of the UN.

As a consultative NGO, LSI will be allowed to sit in as observers on public meetings of the council and its subsidiary bodies, just as LSI can make written and oral statements on the field of human trafficking at the meetings.

The consultative status is described in the United Nations charter, Article 71, as follows: “The Economic and social council may make suitable arrangements for the consultation with non governmental organisations which are concerned with matters within its competence. Such arrangements may be made with international organisations and where appropriate with national organisations after consultations with the member of the United Nations concerned.

As an organisation with consultative status LSI will be required to submit quadrennial reports on activities and events within the network.
